87-year-old John Fitch, of Pittsfield, who recently had a successful rehabilitative stint at Mount Carmel Care Center, has experienced more than most will in several lifetimes. He learned to fly a plane at the age of 15, taking off and landing at the Pittsfield Municipal Airport. He was inspired and joined the Air Force out of high school.
With the Air Force for four years, he was stationed in Germany after World War II and then served in the Korean War. His most treasured memories from those years was when we played for the Air Force hockey team that took on the national teams in the region and ultimately won the European Championship. Pretty amazing stuff!
Married for 60 years to his long-time sweetheart, Mr. Fitch had a successful career in the construction field as an engineer. He has five children and eleven grandchildren, many of whom are in the Berkshires. Now, that he’s home, he looks forward to enjoying the spring and summer independently after recovering and regaining his strength at Mount Carmel Care Center.
